Define the job before requesting quotes

Boston requires a gas permit for installation or replacement of gas lines, gas appliances and gas heaters. The contractor performing the work must apply in their own name. Boston’s sheet metal permit covers sheet metal installation or repair. Ask the contractor which parts of your proposed ductwork or exhaust work need this permit and whether the project needs related approvals. For both permit types, the city instructs contractors to wait for permit issuance before starting work. After completion, arrange the inspection through Inspectional Services or its online portal. Check credentials for the actual work

Ask for the name and credentials of the person who will service the refrigerant system. EPA requires Section 608 certification for technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment in ways that could release refrigerants. Covered activities include connecting pressure gauges and adding or removing refrigerant. Treat refrigerant certification and municipal trade-permit requirements as separate checks. Request the applicable certification for refrigerant work and the applicant’s trade license for gas or sheet metal permits. Compare heat pump proposals and billing options

MassCEC recommends getting multiple heat pump quotes and asking about references from customers with similar systems, manufacturer training, installation timing, subcontractors, warranties and homeowner training.
