Choose between a disposal trip and a hauling crew

Consider a disposal trip if you can lift, secure, transport and unload the items without taking risks. Choose a crew if you want someone to carry furniture from inside the house, handle stairs or clear several rooms. Describe the work before asking for a price: a driveway pile and a basement cleanout need different loading plans.

For ordinary household garbage, first check whether the material fits inside your cart with the lid closed. Regina provides biweekly garbage collection year-round and prohibits extra waste beside the cart. Plan a separate disposal trip or collection arrangement for the remainder. [4]

Sort the cleanout into furniture and general waste, appliances, yard material, and household hazardous materials. Ask about donation or recycling for usable items, but confirm the destination and acceptance before describing anything as diverted from landfill.

Get a quote that covers the whole job

Send photos of the entire pile and identify items that the photos might hide. Include mattress counts, appliance types, bagged material and loose renovation debris. Explain the pickup location, stairs, elevator arrangements, door clearance and where the crew can park. Ask whether you must move anything outside before arrival.

Request a written total with loading, transport, disposal, applicable taxes and any item charges identified. If the hauler prices by truck space, ask for the truck capacity and the amount your quote covers. If it prices by weight, ask how it measures weight and documents disposal. Agree on how you will approve a price change before loading begins.

Account for appliances, mattresses and dense debris

The landfill charges CAD 10 per refrigerant-containing item plus the standard waste rate for eligible residential loads. You must empty refrigerators and freezers. The City excludes commercial quantities of refrigerant-containing items and large commercial appliances, so ask the hauler to confirm acceptance and its disposal route. [1]

For fewer than five mattresses, the landfill applies the standard waste rate. For five or more, it adds CAD 20 per mattress to that rate. The mattress rule excludes box springs. Give the hauler separate counts for mattresses and box springs rather than describing them all as beds. [1]

The City accepts clean concrete and asphalt without a disposal charge when loads meet its material specifications. It charges CAD 95 per tonne for asphalt mixed with garbage and for standard garbage and rubble. Before combining demolition debris with household junk, ask whether the crew can keep qualifying materials separate and whether its quote includes that sorting. [1]

Prepare the pickup and confirm the destination

Mark what stays and what goes. Remove personal documents, valuables and anything stored inside furniture. Clear a route between the items and the loading area, and tell the crew about fragile surfaces or access restrictions. Ask for proof of insurance and agree on who handles accidental property damage.

The City’s hazardous materials depot accepts listed household materials, including paint, batteries and propane cylinders, but excludes garbage, appliances and electronics. Keep products in original or labelled containers and do not mix them. Before taking batteries to the depot, cover their ends with non-conductive tape, such as packing, duct or electrical tape. Keep hazardous materials separate until you have confirmed their destination. [2]

If renovation debris may contain asbestos, pause the ordinary cleanout booking and arrange assessment and a suitable disposal plan. Regina requires a special waste permit for asbestos and rejects asbestos loads mixed with regular garbage. Do not ask a general hauling crew to treat unidentified material as ordinary rubble. [1]
