The City leaves wood and branches from utility tree preparation on the property. The owner or contractor must clear anything blocking sidewalks or driveways. Ask your tree contractor to include this cleanup in the written scope and explain who arranges the utility visit. [1]

Plan elm work around Alberta's rules

On October 11, 2026, the annual permitted elm-pruning window is open. Alberta permits pruning from October 1 to March 31 and bans it from April 1 to September 30. During the ban, corrective pruning of a hazardous elm branch requires inspector approval. The province allows removal of an elm tree at any time of year with immediate disposal. [2]

Include elm wood disposal and stump treatment in the job, rather than leaving them for another visit. Alberta prohibits storage of untreated elm wood and restricts transport to the closest elm disposal site. For stump treatment, the province specifies removal to at least 10 cm below the soil line followed by soil fill, or treatment satisfactory to an inspector. [2]

If you suspect Dutch elm disease, call STOPDED at 1-877-837-3567. A property owner cannot send diagnostic samples to the provincial lab directly. The province requires private-tree samples to come through a municipality, Agricultural Fieldman, tree company or STOPDED; tree companies must contact the municipality, Agricultural Fieldman or STOPDED before submission. Compare quotes with the same cleanup scope

Ask each contractor to quote the same tree and the same finish. Describe access through gates, anything beneath the canopy, and where the crew can put equipment. Request separate amounts for tree work, stump work, hauling and any utility coordination. Ask whether the final amount includes disposal charges and applicable taxes.

Decide whether you want logs left behind, branches chipped or all material hauled away. For elm work, have the contractor explain how the proposed method meets Alberta's disposal rules.
