Compare your collection allowance with the items you need removed. Halifax includes sofas, mattresses and large appliances in its bulky-waste guidance. Eligible curbside items must not exceed 200 kg or eight feet in length. Consider reuse for furniture in good condition. Ask the intended recipient about condition requirements and pickup arrangements before setting a removal date. Keep a disposal backup if you have a move-out deadline.

Get a quote for the items and access

Send each hauler the same item list and photographs. Include large-item dimensions, stairs, elevator access and the carrying distance to a legal loading space. Specify whether the crew will collect from inside or from an outdoor pile. Ask who will dismantle furniture that cannot fit through the exit.

Ask whether the quote covers the listed items or depends on truck space, weight or time. For a truck-space quote, request the usable capacity and the share your load will occupy. Get written terms for minimum charges, extra labour and cancellation, then confirm the final amount before loading.

Confirm current facility charges before a self-haul trip. Ask each private hauler for a written total that includes disposal charges and tax.

Request proof of liability insurance and ask how the crew will protect floors, doorways and shared areas. Agree on an arrival window and what happens if access fails. For renovation debris, request a disposal receipt identifying the receiving facility.

Separate appliances, chemicals and renovation debris

Arrange refrigerant removal before fridge or freezer collection. Halifax requires a qualified technician to remove the gases before recycling collection. For eligible curbside properties, the municipality provides this service free and attaches a completion sticker. You can then put the appliance out on your regular garbage day. Condos and apartments with more than six units must contact a private refrigeration contractor for CFC removal. [1]

Keep paint, solvents, fuel, propane cylinders and batteries separate from ordinary junk. Halifax’s household special waste depot accepts specified household materials but excludes appliances, electronics, asbestos and construction debris. For small renovation loads at single-unit homes, Halifax allows residents to replace up to five garbage bags with renovation-waste bundles. Make bundles arm-load sized, no longer than 1.2 metres and no heavier than 34 kg, with no exposed screws, nails or staples. Buildings with two to six units cannot use municipal curbside collection for renovation waste. [1]

Arrange delivery of excess lumber, roofing, gyproc or concrete to a licensed construction and demolition facility. Otter Lake does not accept these materials for drop-off. Prepare the property and confirm the handover

Mark items to remove and separate anything you want to keep. Empty drawers, clear the carrying route and keep children and pets away from loading. Point out fragile surfaces and tight turns before the crew moves furniture.

Halifax directs condo residents to their management company or association and calls for separate arrangements for large appliances and renovation debris. Plan winter access before staging heavy items outdoors. Halifax Stanfield airport’s 1991–2020 normals record average snow depths of 10 cm in January and 13 cm in February.
