Define the job before choosing an installer

Describe whether you are replacing an appliance in the same position or moving it somewhere else. Include the model number, fuel type and installation manual. Ask the provider to identify any work outside the quoted hookup, including changes to water connections, drainage, wiring, cabinets or exhaust routing.

For a dishwasher, photograph the opening and the connections under the sink. For laundry appliances, include the water valves, drain, power connection and dryer exhaust connection. For a refrigerator with a dispenser or ice maker, show the proposed water connection. Ask the installer to assess the connections before promising a completed installation on delivery day.

Measure the appliance opening and the route from the entrance. Include doorways, stairs and tight turns. If you live in a condominium or rental, ask the building manager about access arrangements and permission for alterations before scheduling the work.

Arrange electrical work with the right credentials

Nova Scotia Power states that electrical installations require a worker with a certificate of qualification in the Electrical Construction trade. Do not assume that a replacement needs a wiring permit, or that an exemption allows an unqualified installer to alter wiring. Nova Scotia Power lists conditional exemptions for specified replacements and branch-circuit installations. If the electrician opens a wiring permit, ask them to include inspection coordination in the scope. Nova Scotia Power requires an inspection before workers conceal wiring and describes a final inspection after completion. Settle that sequence before anyone closes a wall or covers new wiring behind finished cabinetry. [1]

Check gas licences and completion paperwork

For a natural-gas or propane appliance, ask for the contractor’s Gas Business Licence and the responsible technician’s licence. Nova Scotia requires authorization for regulated gas work. The province identifies Class 2 and Class 2A contractor businesses as authorized to install gas appliances and piping systems. [2] [3]

Ask the contractor to identify the permit or registration route before work starts. Under the Fuel Safety Regulations, qualifying installations with a total input load of 400,000 BTU/hr or less and only certified gas appliances, containers and equipment can use gas registration instead of a gas permit. Include completion documentation in your agreement. The regulations require the responsible licensed installer to complete and post a green tag after a compliant installation and before charging it with gas. Compare quotes and prepare for handover

Request a written price for the work the provider has reviewed. Ask for separate amounts for installation labour, connection materials, alterations, permit or registration administration, delivery handling and removal. Confirm taxes and ask how the provider will obtain your approval if they uncover additional work.

Get quotes based on your appliance and existing connections to set your budget. Ask each provider to price the same scope so you can compare the totals and exclusions.
