Choose the work before comparing contractors

Describe your concern before requesting a cut: a damaged branch over the roof, declining foliage, clearance for a project, or a tree you want removed. Ask the contractor to explain whether they recommend assessment, pruning or entire-tree removal, and what they expect that work to achieve. If you want to retain the tree, say so before the site visit.

Manitoba’s Arborists Regulation defines arboriculture as planting, pruning and treatment of trees and other woody plants, excluding crown timber and entire-tree removal. It requires valid International Society of Arboriculture certification for someone acting or presenting themselves as an arborist, subject to its exceptions. Request proof of liability insurance and ask how the contractor will protect your roof, fence, driveway and neighbouring property. For a removal, ask about experience with comparable access and hazards. Record credentials and insurance in your comparison notes.

Resolve power-line hazards before booking

Manitoba Hydro tells homeowners to keep themselves and equipment at least 3 m from power lines and to leave trimming or removal within that distance to a qualified utility arborist. Owners are responsible for vegetation on private property, including trees growing into the overhead lines between a pole and a house. Municipalities handle trees on public land. [3]

For a tree that may threaten wires or electrical equipment, use Hydro’s tree safety assessment process. Hydro requests two photos showing the line or pole in the vegetation and the entire tree with the ground, wires, poles and nearby buildings. Take photos from a safe position. Compare written scopes and prices

Request quotes against the same scope. Identify each tree, the branches or clearance involved, and whether you want an assessment before authorizing removal. Ask each contractor to specify access, equipment placement, protection of nearby property, cleanup and completion arrangements. Request separate prices for optional work so you can decide what to include.

For removal, specify the intended stump finish and ask whether the price includes grinding, removal of grindings, backfill and surface restoration. Ask who arranges any needed utility coordination or municipal approvals, and how the contractor will price additional work discovered on site. Keep changes in writing.

For elm work, include wood disposal in the scope. Brandon directs owners to cut removed elms flush with the ground and burn, bury or chip the wood. Plan timing and access

Schedule healthy-elm pruning outside April 1 through July 31. Brandon permits pruning dead or damaged branches on healthy elms outside that restriction and advises sterilizing tools between trees.
